Eyewear design by Robert La Roche

Recently I visited the new exhibition “Robert La Roche – Personal View” at the museum of applied arts (MAK, Museum angewandter Kunst) in Vienna. I was totally impressed by the great work of Robert La Roche. I found out that he was the first professional Austrian eyewear designer. Not only Austrians loved his glasses. Soon R. La Roche became a successful, cosmopolitan brand in the world of fashion. La Roches original (sun)glasses were mainly worn by celebrated fashion models and Hollywood stars. His fans included the 2 famous artists Andy Warhol and Yoko Ono.

The exhibition is showing a great selection of models from his active period as a designer since the 1970s until the sale of the brand at the end of the 1990s. In order to get an insight in his work as a designer the show has sketches, photo and film material and advertisements (from fashion magazines).

I would describe the glasses with the words “unique” and “individual”.

Enjoy my photos from the exhibition and if you are staying in Vienna then you should absolutely go see it by yourself. It’s still on until 25 September 2016.
